A trip, there and back, through Gosty Hill Tunnel

The only way to reach Hawne Basin is via the 557yd Gosty Hill tunnel. Hawne Basin is at the terminus of the Dudley No 2 canal and knowing that the red diesel price was one of the cheapest around these parts, it was well worth risking the confines of the tunnel. From the onset it looked like any other tunnel, a tad narrow, but ceiling height looked to be okay. This was very deceptive as the ceiling suddenly drops part way through, not just once but several times. The worse was when we got nearly to the end when one was lulled into a false sense of security by the ceiling height returning to normal, only for it to suddenly drop again with the walls even narrower and no longer straight. For us to make it through we had to removed the chimney, omni aerial and solar panels from the top box lid. Did we need to??? Well still not sure but the photos show how tight it was so better safe then sorry.

Ceiling dropped dramatically.

Dracula greeted us. As a warning????

First low bit

Height was okay but the walls came in a tad more.

slight kink in the tunnel

Nearly reached the end but yet another claustrophobic bit to negotiate.

Barely missed the side of the top box. Solar panels would most definitely have hit the wall.

 And on the way back.

Met some ducks half way through

Think we may have surprised him.
